Malabar Farm has always held a special place in my heart. It's in our hometown, it is a beautiful spot for any time of the year, and it never ceases to amaze those who have never seen it before. It is of one of the places that makes you proud to be an American. Malabar Farm is this week's little gem.
Malabar Farm was built in 1939 by Pulitzer-prize winning author Louis Bromfield. Bromfield grew up in Pleasant Valley and decided to return as an adult and buy a farm. The home itself was designed and constructed as a Greek revival style and has 32 rooms. Bromfield was active in hosting and writing in this home and had as many as 20,000 people visit per year. The Farm in total sits on 1,000 acres of land.
The farm's true claim to fame despite the famous owner of this home was the wedding of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in 1945.
Today, the farm is an active place in the community and has events such as the Maple Sugaring Festival, Heritage Days, and Wagon tours. It also has a youth hostel farmhouse where many international guests have stayed.
If you ever decide to make a trip to Ohio be sure to include Malabar Farm in your plans!
