Phillips Collection

Historic Highlight: Phillips Collection

Happy Historic Home highlight Thursday! Last week, the Venyou team visited the Phillips Collection. The Phillips Collection is an art museum located in Dupont Circle. This beautiful mansion is hidden in a row of townhouses and is quite an unexpected joy to behold if you don't already know what's inside.

The Collection was founded by Duncan Phillips and Marjorie Acker Phillips as the Phillips memorial Gallery. Their wealth was a product of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company. Duncan Phillips expanded their family collection exceeding 600 works. Due to this, they turned their residence into an art museum. The Collection has a permanent collection of nearly 3,000 works including Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Pablo Picasso.

The home itself is a Georgian Revival house dating back to 1897 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home expanded 30,000 square feet in 2006 and the new spaces are known as the Sant Building. Today it houses exhibits and permanent collections alike. This one, like our feature last week, is breathtaking and unexpected
